A Quick Survey

I would like to find out more about how and why you listen to podcasts and/or internet radio. I’m currently designing a business model for a new portal that I’m extremely excited about, and want to take your current listening habits and desires into consideration right from the planning stage!

If you haven’t done so already, please take the time to answer a few questions on this quick survey.

Thanks in advance for your time and input!

On the Radio: About Love

If you’ve had an opportunity to listen to any of last years TableTalk series, you know Love Newkirk and I have a history. We’ve literally known one another since we were both kindergarteners at John Downey Elementary school back in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and were also members of the same Brownie troupe.

The paths leading us to Germany were very different, but the sense of friendship has – thankfully! – remained strong, which is just one reason why I’m especially pleased to have her as my final On the Radio guest for 2011!

A talented singer-songwriter, TV and stage moderator in both English and German, as well as actress and producer, Love has developed into an inspirational all-round performer. She began her singing career in gospel churches, musical theater stages and jazz clubs in our hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, before winning the lead role in the European tour of the Broadway hit musical “Bubblin’ Brown Sugar”. After receiving rave reviews for her powerhouse performance, Love decided to take a leap of faith and stayed in Europe when the tour ended. Here she accepted several proposals for TV and stage performances, before landing a prime-time spot on her own soul program „Groove“ which aired daily on VH-1 here in Germany.

Since starring in “Soul Sister”, a show that was the best touring musical in Germany in 2007, Love has gone on to a prominent role in the successful “Pasta É Basta“, as well as being an ambassadress for the African-descended community on her own local TV show “Afrika Outlook”  on Hamburg’s T.I.D.E. television.

Tune in as Love shares stories of her life in one of Germany’s most vibrant Afro-communities.

New Feature 3: On the Radio

This – like the TableTalk – is technically more a “renewed” feature than a “new” one. I created the original On the Radio segment as a result of hugely positive response to the first TableTalk. So many of you were happy and eager to hear from  and about other Afro-European women that I wanted to provide a(nother) platform for us all to get to know one another better.

In the meantime, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting the following women:

  • Harolynne Bobis (Greece)
  • Jemitra Hairston (Netherlands)
  • Carolyn Vines (Netherlands)
  • Jo Kelly-Bai (China)
  • Minna Salami (UK)
  • Celeste Blackwell (Germany/UK)

on their own On the Radio segments. In addition, there were two open calls where I – along with Lillian Ogbogoh and Jemitra Hairston – talked about plans for the Uncaged Birds™ retreats.

Interested in listening to a segment from the archive? Just click on the “On the Radio” in the category cloud in the column to the right to find a list of all programs!

We got back on track with this month’s segment with Celeste Blackwell.  Following next month’s TableTalk I’ll be keeping up the momentum of the monthly one hour segments. I’m extremely happy to say that my special guest on 13 December 2011 will be

Minna Salami

writer and commentator on Africa & Diaspora society & culture, feminism & race and founder of the blog  MsAfropolitan.

Would you like to suggest a guest – or be a guest yourself?

Feel free to contact me with your suggestion(s) or topic(s) you’d particularly like to see covered!

On the Radio: Retreat Warm-Up Call

Planning for the upcoming retreat is at a fever pitch. If anything, because I am thinking so much about the rôle and significance of stories and storytelling, everything I touch seems to be related to the subject in one way or another.

Have you already had a look at the retreat flyer?

Of course, there have been lots of questions about the retreat. And I have answered them as they’ve hit my inbox. But instead of handing out the information in bit and pieces, I want to give as many of you as possible the opportunity to have your questions about the retreat answered, as well as to meet the triumvirate of coaches who’ll be facilitating the program.

That’s why this month’s On the Radio will be dedicated to that topic.

Join me along with Lillian and Jemitra as we fill you in on the details of the retreat:

  • Why the topic of storytelling is so compelling for each of us as women of African descent living in Europe
  • What each of us brings to the table to make this retreat a truly memorable experience
  • Additional details about some the sessions

To be a part of the conversation, either dial in or sign in to the live chat:

Topic: “Empowerment means telling my own story” – The Retreat

Special Guests: Lillian Ogbogoh and Jemitra Hairston

Date: 12 April 2011

Time: 7.30pm CDT

Update: On the Radio

First of all, thanks to all of you who took the poll and left comments last week! I really appreciate your feedback.

Also my thanks to anyone who tuned in to my insightful interview with Minna Salami on Tuesday. It was chock-full of information and especially refreshing to compare different international perspective with someone who has experienced them all first-hand.

Unfortunately, the technical goddesses were not on our side that night. Minna and I had trouble connecting before the call, the sound quality was uninspiring and – to top it all off – I have had a problem retrieving the recording. That last point is especially frustrating, because I know many of you listen to the tapes as time and your own schedules allow.

To remedy that, however, I am currently negotiating with Minna for a return interview. It’ll soon be time for the 2nd annual TableTalk – the virtual series I initiated to launch this site/program – and I would love to have Minna on board to expand on our dialogue on “The Other ‘F-Word'”.
